Undergraduate Programs
Minor in Geographic Systems
The minor in geographic information systems offers insights into the structure of our global economy and the global village in which we live. Aspects of the physical environment, resources available to the human population, and the cultural context of society are studied, often with the aid of geographic information systems.
What is Geographic Information Systems? Geographic information systems of computer software, hardware, data, and personnel help manipulate, analyze, and map layers of information that are tied to a spatial location. Using geographic information systems technology, students can better understand geographic patterns that play essential roles in such fields as transportation, infrastructure management, telecommunications, tourism, health, education, aerospace, politics, and the petroleum industry.
Career Opportunities
The minor allows a rich program of study that provides a solid basis for careers in geographic information systems and in national, regional, and international agencies and gives students the specific skills needed for practical applications. The minor is designed to help students pursue careers in the rapidly expanding opportunities in the geospatial and mapping sciences.
